Cannabis-prescription interactions

Happy Saturday evening everyone! I hope you're relaxing this weekend, recovering from last week and getting ready for the week ahead. This has been a crazy busy week for me here at The Green Nurse Educator. Last week I was invited to talk about patient safety at a Veteran's Roundtable alongside NP Kadi and released a cannabis journal. It is always encouraging to meet other healthcare professionals who are also passionate about providing medical cannabis education and being invited to talk about cannabis is beyond exciting. I love to talk about how cannabis can be useful in different situations as a medicine as well as the precautions that should be taken when consuming cannabis. It's an incredibly important topic to continue discussing because we're learning more and more about the science behind cannabis each and every day.

During NP Kadi's talk I learned about a website that Penn State created to check for interactions between cannabis and other prescription medications. This is web only, there isn't a mobile app currently, but it's far easier to navigate through than the incredibly long list of potential interactions that can be found on other websites. You can find this website at: https://cann-dir.psu.edu/drug-research/results To use the website you first select if you're a patient/caregiver or if you're a healthcare professional and then on the next page you select if you want to look at interactions with CBD, THC, or cannabis as a whole. Once you've made you're selections them you type in the names of your prescription medications and submit. In the patient/caregiver tab you'll see a simplified statement about whether cannabis will increase or decrease the effectiveness of the prescription medications. If you select the healthcare professional tab, you get the same information along with what particular pathways are involved in the interaction.

I also recently released a journal on Amazon called the Cannabis Journal: Your Medical Cannabis Journey. This is a great way to keep track of the symptoms you're treating, the type of cannabis you're purchasing, and whether it's worth buying again. The practice of cannabis medicine is still very much a practice, but with more research will come standardization. By tracking the percentages of the compounds within cannabis you can begin to pin point which specific terpenes or cannabinoids are the best for your situation. If you'd like to begin journaling your cannabis journey head on over to the link below to get started!

Next time we'll finish out the list of terpenes and start looking at the different cannabinoids that are within the cannabis plant. Stay tuned for that coming up! I would love to chat with you about your cannabis questions. You can reach me via social media at The Green Nurse Educator or at 580-749-9127
